There's been radio sirensa proposed before - a 200 milliwatt transmitter combined with receivers in cars. I don't know how well that would work. It would be more practical now with current technology, and it would take perhaps three years or so to implement in existing cars and to add to new ones. <...

I grew up in that era. Ambulances and police cars didn't use Q sirens for reasons of space and current draw. There were companies like Sireno, Dietz, and Federal itself making sirens for these uses. IMO, when these sirens were mounted under a hood they weren't better than the electronics in use now....

Daniel wrote:I read somewhere that Kingsley Field AFB in Klamath Falls, Oregon, has a siren system, but I have never seen one there.
I'd be very surprised at any military base that didn't have some sort of system.

I've experienced Martinshorns and I'm convinced they could be a complete replacement for sirens in many applications. Years ago volunteers in Virginia could have automatically alternating air horns (which were legal as sirens for all applications; don't know about now). One guy had real Martinshorns...

If you're going to get an honest shot at the work then let them save face if they can. Rubbing people's faces in their screwups may be gratifying but it's expensive.

Are sure these all still work? At least one of these look like it could have been put up against the day Goering's Luftwaffe darkened the skies. :P

Oh ok sorry. It would be pretty hard though to convince any EMA director about what to do with sirens. You're right. EMA directors aren't paid to be siren enthusiasts and most of them aren't. The siren system is just part of their job. In Hamilton County, how much of the purchasing decision is in t...

has anyone put their hands on one? All I see are the listings on Ebay. I would wager that they are an exact copy of the type 447's because of the shape of the screen and the base. Other than the ones on Ebay, where else can you buy hand crank sirens? eBay's about it consistently. You can try milita...

There was a major flood event in the '90s. It's funny you mention it, because they're under flood watch right now (Mon 3/29/10 16:12). My kids lived there, not me, but I was there a lot and I never heard them and they never said they did. If they tested them, it must have been silent testing only.

Do you know the locations of the 2 EOWS 612`s and do you know if they are tested? I've never heard them, and my kids lived there for about three years. One is at Roger Sherman School on Fern Street and the other is at the town transfer station off of Beach Road. They were used for storm surges / flo...
