Are both rotors dual-tone? I have never been a fan of unidirectional rotating sirens, but as they say, two heads are better than one. Is it still in use?

A question for Canadians: It seems that every building I have entered in Canada, from British Columbia to Ontario, uses the same kind of fire alarm: a 12" red bell. It this part of a national fire alarm code, or just some manufacturer with a monopoly on the industry?

The idea of using the bell as a pressure gauge is a very plausible one, except that this bell came from the boiler room of a monastery where undue noise is generally avoided. They have several large tower bells which are pealed by 1/4 Hp. motors in different combinations for various liturgical event...

On the Amityville recording, I believe that the low-pitched siren is a Sterling Little Giant, although it does sound just like an STL-10. In fact, I've heard somewhere a more recent recording of this siren by itself. I believe most of these sirens are still standing in Amityville. The high-pitched s...

Welcome to our weird little community. I grew up in a town which used only air horns for an alarm, and hadn't heard my first siren (a Federal Model 5) until I was about eleven years old. Now I live in a state where the only sirens still in existence are operated by small town fire departments. The l...

These are the sirens in Marion County, Oregon. Like almost all Oregon counties, they do not have a countywide siren system. Those that exist are controlled by local entities, such as fire departments. All are at fire stations unless noted. Federal Signal Model 2: Brooks, Lake Labish, Aumsville, Jeff...

Does this mean, then, that HOR is the same as H?rmann and are German-made sirens? I would like to know more about this company (whoever they are), because these sirens are virtually unknown out here in the Pacific Northwest and they have an awesome sound, regardless of port ratio. Some of them could...

Steam powered alarm bells

Yes, they exist. I have one. I don't have a photo (since it is buried in a pile of boxes), but it looks like a regular electric alarm bell from the front. It came from a 1928-vintage boiler room and it was connected to a steam line and an electric valve. Under the gong, the steam line ends in a nozz...

Most older Darley Champion sirens consisted of a Model 2 or a Model 5 with a slotted or louvered housing over it. Newer models were shaped like their Federal counterparts, only with more rounded covers, and one model had eight, stubby horns coming out of it. Given that the Model 5 or STH-10 guts ins...

I thought I'd read somewhere that some Decot sirens were installed in Seattle and maybe Portland as well. Is there a listing of installations available?
