The most ominous-sounding siren I've heard is the HOR Super Sirex, a gigantic, 50 Hp. siren with a slow windup and a 7/10 ratio (the notes G and C#, give or take). This is a flatted 5th interval, not a minor 2nd, which would have one tone a semitone above the other. I don't believe that a minor 2nd ...

At the end of the film, Das Boot , the siren is seen in the distance on the roof of the U-boat pens, which were supposed to be in occupied France. Since these French sirens have nine ports like German ones do, they will rise to the same frequency. Any differences would be in the areas of rise/fall t...

Fire signal

It seems that every fire department using outdoor warning sirens has a different fire call. One Oregon town I lived in, Mt. Angel, would sound three 12-second blasts on their 2T22, while the city of Ashland sounded a one-minute steady signal on their Model 5. Silverton (Sterling M5) and Scotts Mills...

As I understand it, Washington's Thunderbolt system was replaced by Allertors about ten years before it was completely removed. I cannot understand why the city most liable to enemy attack of all American cities would not have a siren system, but this is the same city which re-elected their crackhea...

Thanks for the schedule, but where is Brookings? We have one in Oregon, which has three large air horns surmounted by a Model 2, but they don't test them regularly. Since there are only one or two other people from Oregon on this board, I'll have to guess that you are not referring to my Brookings.

I always enjoyed the Model A sirens we had in school (and their Sterling and IBM equivalents) and which are still used in many of Oregon's older school buildings. Many have been replaced with obnoxious piezo sounders, but there are still many sirens out there. Aside from those, I like a good electro...

It may also be a ventilation pipe for some underground area or machinery. I haven't been to Vancouver for several years, but I remember seeing several belt-drive Allertors there and an electronic siren on a rooftop near the Harbour Centre Tower which consisted of six round speaker trumpets arranged ...

A kinder, gentler Civil Defense. They only sound it in the event of a really big clearance sale.
