Re: Thunderbolt sirens... any value estimates?

From a business standpoint, I probably wouldn't plan on making money by restoring and selling them, as they're being phased out in most cities. It's my guess that collector-value is what would apply to Thunderbolts, and that's a tough one to guess. It depends on how many are for sale when you try to...

Re: Westinghouse sirens?

Fun fact, Brunswick also owns Bayliner (plus a few other hull companies) and Mercury Marine. I also recently saw an old victrola-style record player built into a console that was made by Brunswick, the record went in the top like any other console and the projector was fitted underneath the turntab...

Re: Westinghouse sirens?

I have no knowledge on that, but I do know that at times, Westinghouse and GE (and RCA and Brunswick and many other major electric & electronic mfrs), were bought & sold amongst each other. Brunswick (the same company who makes the bowling alley machinery and made radios in the 1920s), made ...

Re: SD-10 dissassembly

I had a rough time getting the housing off of both of my SD-10s. As said above, the eye bolt has to come off, then I took the housing off piece-by-piece, as it needed to be worked over for dents and painted. I believe it's possible to lift the housing off in one piece, but it's big & clumsy, and...

It looks like they removed the Thunderbolt at Fire Station #56 on the extreme North side of Dallas. I was driving by on Beltline on Saturday and noticed it was missing. It appears that whoever owned the fenced in area where the siren was standing, received permission from the city to install that l...

I hate seeing fire damage, and especially to things which I collect and restore. I'm hopeful that the siren will be put back in shape. Usually in the case of a public building and public property destroyed, it's up to the accountants and the county or city treasurer to decide if it makes sense to re...

I finally got to go by the old fire house, and got these pictures yesterday. Looks like the siren itself isn't in too bad of shape, but that wood platform is scary! Nice find! How many towns in CA (besides San Francisco anyway) still have a working siren system? It seems so many towns out there have just abandoned their sirens altogether. Several cities and counties have working sirens in Southern California, but not for storms. Huntington Beach has a fairly n...

How did I miss this Model 5? Fillmore, CA

I just noticed this Model 5, sitting ontop of the old Fillmore, CA firehouse at 455 Main St., Fillmore, CA. It's now a railroad museum, and evidently the siren is still just sitting up there. I doubt if it has any connection to the museum, but I WILL find out!!! Here's a Google Maps link to streetvi...

I trust Bwillcox's opinion... I'm an electronics tech, but I honestly have zero experience with that type of radio equipment, I agree that they're crystals (or frequency oscillator chips). If they have two pins, they're crystals, and most likely you can get ones of any physical shape, and they'll wo...
