Yes that IS a Gamewell Diaphone. It's the only blue one I've ever seen. Right next door on a pole is a Model 5 - ALSO painted blue. It has a mesh screen over its throat to keep the bugs and birdies out. From what I've heard (mostly from the Central PA fire board), it has a rather unpleasant note. Cl...

It is within 50 feet of some peoples homes.I myself live about 3 houses away from it. It has g...

Good news in East Farmingdale, NY

There have been a number of posts and threads over the last few years which have been lamenting the replacement of the Thunderbolts across America with electronic sirens. Well, here on Long Island, in one mid-size district, the tables have been turned. The East Farmingdale Fire Department has put th...

That SD-10 - is that on private property? Right next door to somebody's house...it looks like the homeowner put it there.
Nice picture of the Cyclone too - those are ominous-looking creatures.

NYC had HOR sirens exclusively - in three sizes: 3hp, 5hp and 10hp. The 3hp was a knock-off of the Federal Model 2; the 10hp looked so much like the Federal 7.5hp model that it was very hard to tell them apart. The one that looked different was the 5hp model you see in the two photos. The second pho...

I don't know about Ely, but these are the ones I grew up with. They are still there but rarely used. They are wrapped with heat cable, but sometimes they would blow a puff of mist on cold days. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-1/1134256/Mt.Shastahornscloseuptiny.JPG Wow, that's an impressive rac...

Might that Horn have been a Diaphone?
