I would think the siren with the square horns is a very early Sentry - it looks very similar to one of the vertical Sterlings that there have been pictures on here of before, only with square horns

It would certainly assist in keeping the wind down tones loud, in comparison to say an unassisted rotor (like that of the T-128 or the 2001) where they get quieter as they spin down as less air is being sucked in; this design seems to keep the air supply up to the rotor. There is no real orientation for the brushes - the shape there is what has been formed by wear.

In a motor, brushes do not affect the direction of rotation. Are the field windings connected?
