If it sounds like a low tone Model 7, it is an 8-port Screamer. This will give the same B-flat pitch like most Sentry sirens. Most Screamers that I've heard are the 9-port version, which has a higher pitch (C) and is basically an American E-57. What confuses me is that the Edwards Model S and the Er...

I've been around Reno, and although I wasn't looking for sirens, I don't remember ever seeing any. A half-hour outside Reno, in Doyle, CA, is an unusual WWII-era siren, and also if you follow the signs to Chilcoot and Beckwourth on the road to Quincy (also in CA), you'll find one of those trapezoida...

I believe that #5 is actually a 1930's Sterling siren with the coding/brake apparatus. Notice that the cowl on the near side is twice as wide as the far side. The brake mechanism went between one rotor and the motor and would stop the siren quickly for coding purposes. It was a much less efficient s...

Russian sirens

I finally found a Russian distributor of outdoor sirens. I'm not sure who manufactures them, though. Perhaps someone who speaks better Russian can glean some more facts from the site. I believe the large one is a 3 kw. siren. http://www.ckpr.ru Click on the "produktsiya" button (2nd from l...

These things used to be found all over Canada and that nearly all of them were removed fairly recently. I understand that they were originally single tone, but because of Civil Defence requirements, were modified with a smaller rear rotor to accomplish this. I believe that they were minor 3rd sirens...

The first STL-10 I'd heard up close was in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and they are not as forceful-sounding as the STH-10 because of the low pitch. Their range, though, is greater. When I lived in Omaha, there was an STL-10 about three miles from my house that I could easily hear indoors at night. Linco...

I understand that the Hurricane was prone to damage from water running into the horn. That could have been solved with a 90? twist in the horn, making the divider vertical, or better yet, simply shorten the divider and angle it slightly downward. My complaint about the Hurricane is the windup is too...
