Thanks for the information and video link. I'm glad to see I found something worthwhile! When I test this tomorrow, I'll try to get it on video if the camera I have works well enough. Still curious about that serial number. I noticed Dan Drega's horn tag is stamped in the more traditional manner, an...

Found a neat horn today!

I found this horn in an antique shop today, and was surprised to see such a familiar company name on it. I'm wondering what it may have been used for. I would guess some industrial environment like a factory or mill, from the thick cast enclosure. I also noticed the interesting serial number. How do...

My schools all played electronic bells over the PA system. Boring. My high school had some kind of double-ended vibratory horns outside, and another kind not unlike a fire alarm in the halls. My elementary school used mechanical sirens (probably model As) inside and out as fire alarms. Fire drills w...

The only way I could see a bullet doing that would be if the horn was made of cast metal, which it is obviously NOT. Or, if the steel had a major defect in it, also not likely. That metal is thick enough that anything short of a rifle round would just lightly dent it, and rifles punch nice, clean li...

Trivia: The first sirens put to practical use in the late 1800s were steam sirens, and were basically large versions of these. They were used as fog signals and emitted a rather ghostly and thunderous low tone. If I recall correctly, the big ones could hit sound levels of 140dB, ever-so-slightly mor...

I believe they had STL-10s. They now use ATI. I remember someone saying that they still play the STL-10 sound over them, but that was a while back. I've never been there to hear them myself.

Nice photos! That ship horn would be fun to have.

I've only been to Sitka, AK, where some of my dad's friends live. They have a system of STH-10s for tsumami warnings. Our plane made a stop in Ketchikan on the way back, but we didn't get off there and I didn't notice the Model 2.

They do say in the video it was meant to be run off 72 volts.
Oh yeah? Well to be even pickier, what if their battery isn't exactly 24 volts? It could be slightly higher or lower, as batteries often are. :P :D
