West Covina Thunderolt Beheaded

I haven't posted for a while (more into streetlights now) but I passed through West Covina on the way to San Gabriel this weekend. I noticed the landmark Thunderbolt, which stood at the corner of E. Garvey Ave S and Lark Ellen Ave and is also visible from the 10 freeway, had it's head (rotator, chop...

Re: Thunderbolts in existance

San Onofre Nuclear Generating station (now retired) has two 1003s. One on the spent fuel building and another next to a parking lot north of the plant.

Re: Best nuclear siren?

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station's EOWS/Siratone system has been replaced by an ATI system. Speaking of the EOWS, for the sound itself, I would think the "Whoop" tone gets attention and is a good indication that something has gone wrong. http://youtu.be/Pu7sWCXGlvg?t=27s The omnid...

Re: It's a big horn.

Atlas Soundolier ? The setup with the two twist-lock plugs and sockets makes me think that a group of these may have be daisy chained. I also believe it was used on a 70 volt constant voltage speaker system. You may be able to bypass or eliminate the transformer in the connection box to use on a reg...

Re: Two Chrysler Air Raid Sirens for Sale - WW2 and Cold War

Didn't know Dan was selling his sirens. I don't know much about the Victory since he got later but I wonder if he used the SD-10 rotor as they already had one at the museum he worked at. The cold war era Chrysler air raid siren, if I remember correctly, Dan mentioned getting from a guy in Montclair ...

Thunderbolt Was Here

Back in 2008, I did a siren hunt in Orange County and one member here who used to live in Anaheim in the 70's mentioned a Thunderbolt at Brookhurst park which he lived a block from. https://airraidsirens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3628 Anaheim's sirens are now long gone; they stopped testing in June...

Re: Bad News Brea

I know it's been five years since I last posted but I stopped by the Brea Fire Station/Public Works open house last Saturday (May 10) and found that the Thunderbolt had been dismantled sometime late in April when they began renovating the training tower. The blower and RCM are still there (moved aga...

Re: Extremely Rare Sirens

Thunderbolt 2000 (blower driven by a 2 cylinder Onan gas engine) One used to exist in San Dimas behind the fire station on 1st street but was removed around the beginning of 2009. There appears to be another one by Overhill Elementary School in the Windsor-Hills area of Los Angeles (same style pole ...

If those are model 161s, try the 440hz "Whelen" Alert tone.

Found this on the City of Azusa's web page; they test twice a year in April and October
