Roster of Sirens in New York City (& Nearby Areas)

Fri Nov 11, 2016 7:00 am

So all my travelling and research has made me clear of how much Sirens there is in New York City. Although NYC has a Noise Law which places a ban in Civil Defense Sirens, there are many that are hold by the Jewish Community, Federal Corporations, and even private organizations that hold these Sirens in New York City. I'm actually kind they are slowly becoming common again.

Here are the Rosters:

New York City:

Bronx:
- Model 5 or 7?
Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department

Manhattan:
- ATI Sirens
World Trade Center Complex

Queens:
-Two Thunderbolt 1003 Sirens :TBolt: :TBolt:
LaGuardia Airport

- Model 2 & Model 2 Darley
Near the border of Long Island (I remember seeing the Volunteer Fire Department on the highway when I use to go to school on L.I.)

-Unknown Mini Siren
Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department

- Federal Signal Modulator Siren :mod:
Roxbury Fire Department
Rockaway Point Boulevard

Brooklyn:
-Three STH-10 Sirens
Various Locations in Williamsburg
Owned by Unorthodox Jewish Community

-STH-10 Siren
Greenpoint
Owned by Unorthodox Jewish Community

-STH-10 Siren
Crown Heights
Owned by Unorthodox Jewish Community

-Sentry 40V2T (Modified) Siren
Midwood
Owned by Unorthodox Jewish Community

-Unknown Siren (Newly Installed in Brooklyn, it came out in the News)
Bedford-Stuyvesant

-Couple of Whelen 2905 Sirens
Various Locations in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Surrounding Piers and Industrial Areas

Staten Island:
**Coming Soon**

Long Island:

**Coming Soon**

Westchester: Eh, I don't usually go there so expect nothing for a long while.

I hope you guys like my roster! ;)

I believe the correct term is "orthodox Jewish community."

The small sirens at BCVFD look to be a Federal Model Q and maybe a Federal 76?

Good Thread! Here's some more to add: Gerrittsen Beach FD in Queens has two horns (Daniel you might know what they are).

Breezy Point Shopping center (also in Queens) has an older electronic siren https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breezy_Po ... ng_jeh.JPG

Oceanic Hook & Ladder Co on Staten Island has fire horn

Richmond Engine Co. 1 (also Staten Island) may also have horns but it's hard to tell from street view.

At one time there were exactly 741 H.O.R. sirens in the city. That's the peak in all five boroughs. 34 of them were 40-HP Super Sirex models. Some on tall buildings, some 'hidden' among the skyscrapers and tall buildings in Manhattan, and some only 3-4 stories tall on school buildings.

The rest were H.O.R. 5 or 10 HP sirens mainly mounted on buildings owned by the city, or in many cases on wood poles and lamp posts.

With the user "Sirens of Long Island" on youtube, he helped me create a Long Island siren map! He recently found a Alertronic 4000! Credit to him for most(if not all) of the locations!

I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

Westchester's Indian Point sirens (all ATIs) are on the county GIS system. Go to "show additional data on map" and check "Indian Point sirens".

I doubt there are any 2001s in the area. Almost everything in New York is omnidirectional with the notable exception of the nuclear sirens near Rochester and Syracuse.

The two times I have been to New York City I remember seeing a few Modulators that belonged to some industrial plant on the drive in... They might be on the New Jersey side though, I'm not sure.
