Denver Siren Found in Highland, NY

Mon Mar 20, 2017 3:28 pm

Check this out! I drove past this the other day. I literally had no idea it (and the old Model 5 next to it) existed despite my extensive map of the county (Ulster; check the link in my signature), so I was pretty hyped to find it. I think it's the old Highland fire house. The new one has a recently repainted Model 2, and station 2 has an STH-10.

I don't know a whole lot about Denver sirens. Isn't this model called the Duplex? There are other models as well, aren't there?

It's always a good feeling to find a siren you've never known about in an area you are very familiar with.

Denver sirens are very rare despite once being a common sight across America. They were among the very first outdoor warning sirens ever made. Denver sirens were made by the Hendrie & Bolthoff Manufacturing & Supply Company of Denver, CO. The patent (US 1278582) is attributed to William A. Box.
Over 300 Denver sirens were made from their introduction until about 1930 when it appears they quit siren production. I don't know of any named models but there are two I know of: a dual rotor horizontal as shown below with a coupled motor shaft, and a smaller single rotor horizontal siren with a directly coupled rotor (used on boats). On both sirens the rotor is split into two sections, drawing air from both ends.

Not very rare as some other sirens, there is one, possibly 2, just in Oklahoma alone.
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

I would consider Denver sirens rare. I can only think of seven or so off the top of my head, being in Tennessee, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and this one. I'm probably missing a few, but you get the point.

There is one in Burlington, NJ as well behind the Niagra Fire Department, it still works but is not used from what they told me. It is controlled by a light switch in the apparatus bay, I remember taking copious amounts of photos of this thing but can't for the life of me remember where they may be.

If I am not mistaken, I believe Krum Texas has one by the Fire Department.
