I spotted a clean xT22 in old downtown Big Spring yesterday... It's on top of the municipal building (Convention Center?) between 3rd & 4th Streets (aka Business 20). It's not visible from Interstate 20. I sometimes like to cruise through business routes in small towns, as you never know what cool stuff you might find! My dream would be to find an old TV repair shop where they never threw anything out since 1939.

I was going to take a picture of the siren, but the local police happened to be right behind me, and I didn't think it would be smart for a Californian with gauged earrings in a Toyota 4x4 to go snapping pictures of a little town's public buildings. Maybe I'll get a shot of it on my way to Los Angeles next week, if I can. Has anyone else noticed this one? (please excuse if it was covered in another post that I was too lazy to find  )

Good find, Charles!

I have never been to Big Spring (and it's only around 80-100 miles from me), but I plan to make it down there someday just for the hell of it to see what it is like. I'm hoping since they have a 2T22 they'll have other old sirens, hopefully a variety. I'm wanting get down there and snap a few pictures here and there someday pretty quick (hopefully I can find more sirens...).

P.S., I hope all things work out well on your house!

I was able to go back through Big Spring on Business 20 Saturday afternoon... That building which supports the siren is quite a piece of architecture! I bet that's the pride & joy of the town. (I also trust that they don't have earthquakes there, LOL). Here are a couple pics of the siren:

Charles

Sorry for poor quality on this one... It's a zoom photo, as I couldn't get any closer without the siren disappearing over the horizon of the walls of the building. Image

Well now that I have a few towns documented but not uploaded, I suppose I should get them on here. School and almost full-time employment keep me pretty busy these days.

Tahoka, TX

Tahoka is south of Lubbock about 30 miles, and is located on US 87. They have a decent system of Model 7's and an M-10.

Number of sirens: 4
Types: FS7, FS7T, SM10

Siren 1: Federal 7T/5BT [Avenue S & North 2nd Street/Alley]

Image Image Image

Siren 2: Sterling M-10 [Avenue K & North 1st Street]

Image Image

Siren 3: Federal Model 7 [Avenue K & South 6th Street]

Siren 4: Federal Model 7 [ US 380 & Avenue E/Alley Lintegard Electric]

A few more towns on US 84 North of Lubbock.

Anton, TX
Number of Sirens: 2
Types: FS 2T22, S 3V8S
Notes: I find the Sentry to be a little oddly placed.

Siren 1: Federal 2T22 [Main & E. 4th St.]

Siren 2: Sentry 3V8-Skirted [Coke Ave. & E. 9th]

Littlefield, TX "Leftfield"
Number of Sirens: 4
Types: FSTbolt, FSSTH10
Notes: It would seem that one T-bolt has been disconnected. The RCM panel was missing the door, so I wonder if something happened to the siren ant it got "stuck" on and had to be manually disconnected. Note the fantastic ghetto-rigging of fire hose for the "elbow joint" From this style of installation, I wouldn't be surprised if West Shore did the work. Many of the sirens that they installed in Texas have black flexible tubing going from the blower to the stand pipe.

Amherst, TX
Number of Sirens: 3
Siren Types: FSSD10, DRL2, FS2001SRNB
Notes: This little town surprised me a little bit. They look to have recently installed the 2001. I was expecting that the SD-10 was going to be the only siren around town, but I found the 2001, ventured a little further, and found the Darley 2 as well.

**Sudan will eventually be merged into this thread. For now, check out the "Overkill: We Has It" thread.

Muleshoe, TX
Number of Sirens: 4
Siren Types: FS2001DC, FSSTH-10, SM10
Notes: I think the Muleshoe had a system of something else before this Federal System. There are several suspicious looking poles around town that have the "ladder" bar type things going up them in alleys, but nothing on top but a little platform. It would be interesting to call Muleshoe and see what happened to them, if they had them at all. The VFD still has a Sterling M-10, as many do around the Panhandle.

For what it's worth, here is a map showing the progress I have made over the last year or so. Red dots indicate towns that I have completed full siren hunts in, and may/may not have gotten around to putting pics/maps up. Eventually, the pictures from other West/Central West Texas Siren threads will be moved to this thread. Still a lot to cover, but I have made good progress so far. [About 50 towns and municipalities!]

Thats a lot of miles traveled! Seems that Texas has a more interesting variety than Indiana. Everything's pretty ordinary here :( . I look forward to more posts!

Have a couple more towns to add today. I needed a break from school stress and work, so I forwent all my responsibilities and headed up towards Amarillo to get two towns I've been wanting to do for awhile.

I love the panhandle. As I've said before, it was driving out here as a younger kid through these siren-saturated towns that really got my interest going.

Dumas, TX
Number of Sirens: 17; 13 located.
Siren Types: FS2T22, FSSTH, FSSTL, FS3,5, MRS, AP10, ARM127, ATI, FS2001, FS130

Notes: This is probably the first time in history that I have given up on a town while knowingly having missed some of their sirens. Dumas, TX has 17 sirens. The town isn't all that big, but I actually got tired of looking for sirens. Siren finding tactics don't work in a town like Dumas. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason as to placement. Some units are right next to each other, while other areas are more evenly spaced. They have the most appalling overkill I have ever seen. The term "a siren on every street corner," literally applies to this town. Their system is a mix of Federal/ACA/Sentry/ATI/MARS. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they installed the system, but I think they wanted to try one of everything.

Siren 1: Federal 2T22 [Durret & E. 14th St.]

Siren 2: Federal 2001DC [Bennett & E. 8th St.]

Image Image

Siren 3: ATI Piece of $hit [Bennett & E. 7th YES, 1 BLOCK AWAY from the 2001!]

Siren 4: ACA P-10 [Belmont & NE 6th St.]

Siren 9: Federal STH-10 [Porter Ave. & W 13th St.]

Tulia, TX
Number of Sirens: 9
Siren Types: FS5, FSSTH, FS2001, FSSD10, S3V8-S

Notes: It would appear that Tulia has recently upgraded their aging siren system to include 2001-130's. While in most cases this would mean the termination of the old system, such is not the case. Upon speaking with city today, I was informed that both systems are still operational. This is another great VDSC [very dense siren coverage] town.

Siren 1: Federal STH-10 [Harris Ave. & E. Broadway]

Siren 2: Federal Signal 2001-130 [High School, N. Dallas Ave. & NE 5th]

Overkill: We has that too!

There is a small intersection of a town in between Dumas and Dalhart. I stopped and got a quick couple of shots of their Sentry 5V.

Can't wait for these to start coming more often as it warms up!!

It would seem that I have completely given up on my little project, but such assumptions wouldn't be further from the truth. I have about 80% of the Panhandle now complete, and probably 200 pictures to upload! School, Work, and recently mono, have kept me from running around too far. Most of the towns that remain are either ones I have yet to merge from my "Central West Texas, Cont'd" threads, and the extreme North Panhandle, and South Plains. I have not yet decided if I will be photographing all 90 of Amarillo's sirens. That would be a nice project for kdksiren and his dad. I am bound and determined to find that ACA P-50 that has possibly been mis-labeled as Amarillo. The scenery screams West Texas, and if it exists, I will find it  . Here are 10 are so more towns to look at. I'd like to thank both Trey and kdksiren+dad for giving me direction, as well as riding around with me to find these sirens. We recently made an attempt to make a video of the Canyon, TX system, but when we showed up, the test was canceled.

Without further explanation:

Canyon, TX [Randall County]
Number of Sirens: 7
Types: FS2T22, CYC, DRL2, FS7, TBOLT

**Somehow I lost the pictures of 2 2T22's. Forgiveness please.**

Claude, TX [Armstrong County]
Number of Sirens: 5
Siren Types: DRL7, S3V8S, ABNSH/OM
Notes: Claude has a nice mix of sirens including Banshees/OM-120's, 7HP and a Sentry. Very nice coverage!

Memphis, TX [Hall County]
Number of Sirens: 1 Known
Notes: Memphis threw me for the runaround. Trey and I searched 10 or 15 minutes and only found this one STL-10 at the City Hall. I would expect [and hope] that they had possibly hidden another siren or two in the northern part of town.

Hedley, TX [Donley County]
Number of Sirens: 2
Types: M10, UNKN3/5
Notes: Hedley is a very small village with maybe 100 citizens. They have a nice M-10 and unknown 3 or 5 HP siren at City Hall.

Childress, TX [Childress County]
Number of Sirens: 7
Siren Types: S15VT, DRL2, M-10
Notes: Childress, TX has an aging system of 15/20V2T's, as well as a little 2HP siren on the water tower, and an M-10 at the police department. They, like everyone else, have superior coverage. You will note that one of the Sentries I found is missing its motor housing.

Paducah, TX [Cottle County]
Number of Sirens 1+New Installations
Notes: Paducah was up until recently served by a Sterling M-10. This was just replaced with a Sentry 16V1TB. Both sirens are located at the VFD. When I got out of my car to take the pictures I noticed a volunteer firefighter working on the building so I asked him about the new Sentry. He said it was just recently installed and the city has ordered three more units. Here a a few pictures of the new setup, complete with truck toolbox battery cabinet :)

Matador, TX [Motley County]
Number of Sirens: 1+ More Possible
Notes: Matador does not yet have all paved roads. With recent rains, this made many of the roads unsuitable for travel. We found this STH-10 near the center of town, but I believe they might have another siren in the southern area of town.

Lorenzo [Crosby County]

Lorenzo has a Sterling M-5 that was recently repainted. It looks great!

Whiteface, TX [Hockley County]
Number of Sirens: 3
Siren Types: FS2, FS5, S3V8H
Notes: I was most surprised to fine more than one siren in Whiteface. They have a Model 2, Fedelcode/5, and very new looking Sentry 3V8-H with the newer style skinny horns. It is also mounted in a very inefficient way. It can't be more than 12 feet from the ground, and most of the sound gets blocked by the high school wall.

Been to Dancer, Texas yet? JK

Little towns in the midwest have always fascinated me, along with the scenery.
