Sirens around Birmingham, AL?

Sat Jan 14, 2012 2:09 pm

Well, I'm headin' out to Birmingham today, to go to Brickfair Alabama.

I'm just curious, Are there any sirens in and around the area? I know there's a Thunderbeam near ther, and there's a Thunderbolt atop Birmingham City hall.

Are there any others?

Oh yeah, Jefferson County (where Birmingham is located) has about 250 sirens in operation across the county. Most of your more interesting sirens are going to be down toward Hoover and the surrounding area (south of B'ham), which would be mainly Thunderbolts. Of those, the most interesting one I can think of is in SW Hoover near South Shades Crest Elementary off of S Shades Crest Road, up on the side of a small cell tower. There's another standard run-of-the-mill Thunderbolt installation over by some warehouse-type building on Loma Ridge Drive, in eastern Hoover. Other than that, I can't quite think of any specific ones off the top of my head. Good luck!

Is this the siren you are referring to http://g.co/maps/3g47u?
This is quite an unusual install, it looks like the blower cover is missing :?.

Yes, the one and the same! It did have a missing blower cover for quite some time, but in the recent past it received a new cover. Here's a photo of it with its cover missing:

Also, here's a video of the siren for one of their tests...ignore the kid in the background : http://youtu.be/GkqPBndzW5w

Birmingham is where they have the siren graveyard with the jail-bar thunder-bolt. The most rarest thunderbolt known to man.

Well, I returned last night, I did spot some sirens from the road.

in the vicinity of Anniston Arsenal, I saw a couple of Omni-Directional Whelens, and somewhere near Talledega, I saw a 2t22. And along I-20 there are a couple of 2001-DCs.
24, and not dead yet.
