Holton, Kansas Tornado Drill Ambiance (5T, 2t22, SD-10, 2T)

Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:21 pm

Went up to Holton for the Kansas Statewide Tornado Drill. Holton has a system of Model 5/7Ts, 2t22s, an SD-10, an Model 2T and a 2001 on the far west side of town. I arrived a little late so I was driving while the sirens were sounding, but it still turned out to be a decent video. I'll try and make it up next month when they test and get a little better video. The main sirens you hear are the 5/7T and the 2T, but you can also hear a nearby 2t22 and possibly the SD-10 north of downtown. I included a map with the route I took. Green circle is 2t22, Orange cirlce is 5/7T, Purple circle is SD-10, Dark yellow is 2T, red is 2001.

*On a side note, Model2 (user on the board) and I recorded the 2t22 heard in the video last summer. He has a video of it.

Sirens heard:
Model 5T or 7T mainly heard.
Model 2T
2t22
SSD-10

**Correction**
On the map, I actually turned north on New York, not Wisconsin. So I was actually less than a block away from the 5T.

NICE VIDEO! I like the driving around part where you can hear all the sirens mixing together in different parts of the town.
The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse.

+1. That's a great way to catch all the ambiance. Love the creepy ambient wind down!

Yes, that thing was a lot louder than I thought it would be. All of Holton's sirens seem to be in good working order. Some of them may not look the best, but they sure sound good. An interesting note...I believe all of Holton's sirens (possibly including the 2001) are land-line activated.

Brings back some good memories! Did the 2T22 on the south side of town still sound minutes after the others shut off?

The city did a 3-minute alert, unlike the 1min alert during the test. So as far as I know it sounded only for 3 minutes.
