Old Plymouth Siren

Tue Sep 09, 2014 9:39 pm

Here's a photograph of downtown Plymouth, Michigan, looking south on Main Street. On the pole you can see what looks like a fire siren. I am thinking Federal Electric Company, or Sterling.

That also kind of looks like a Sterling K-5.

If the building on the right is at the southwest corner of South Main and Penniman Avenue, the siren is long gone. Interestingly, while the façade has been heavily modified, the clock still remains. I'd guess that, given the horses and carriages juxtaposed with the power lines I'd put this photo around 1915-1920. Did Sterling have any vertical sirens at that time?

Are we talking about the thing directly above the left column of the foremost building? Because that looks more like a street lighting fixture.

Cool photo nonetheless, my grandfather gave me an 1838 bank note from Plymouth, Michigan years ago. It's neat to think about how old it was even by the time this picture was taken.

You're right. It's a street light hanging over the middle of the street.
