What makes a siren "loud"

Tue Jun 05, 2007 5:29 am

This is kind of a stupid question, but you never know till you ask. What makes a siren like the ASC t-128 or the 2001 "loud" is it the size of the chopper or the speed of the motor or what?

Thanks,

Those are loud because the sound is focused in one direction. They also have unconventional horns focusing the sound. Bigger motors and rotors make them loud to. And so does things like supercharging. There are many factors.

Or, just to rephrase Jason, it's the amount of air chopped that determines total output. Moving more air with blowers, more rpm, and larger rotors are among the ways to put more air through.

Basically, the pressure of chopped air per a certain physical space is what determines the sound, more than the amount of chopped air itself; is a Model T-121 louder than a T-128? Get my point? :P

Its the fact that all the sound output is focused in one direction. Look at the 2001, 130db and a 6 HP motor. Now look at the 40V2T..its 127db and has a 40HP 3 phase motor. It spreads its sound out a lot more, making inefficient.
