No, I wouldnt say attack would be good for contactors, but I wouldnt say its as bad as you think. Locked rotor amps are going to be your high amps that would cause a good amount of arcing on the contactors. But since the motor is still spinning pretty fast, Id say its probably not all that bad.

Does the rotor motor, through gears, also turn the unit?
So, that motor never actually comes to a stop during any kind of tone until the test or warning ends?

No. At least the one's that where here in Allen rotated the whole time.
Stop in between low notes or on the final wind down? The Memphis, TN T-135 didn't stop on low notes but shut off on the last wind down and let the rotor coast by itself.

The P-50 has a seperate rotator motor.
