Binaural recording of 1000T (Alert signal)

Sat Mar 07, 2009 7:19 pm

I recorded this today in Harper Woods, MI. It's a 1000T along the I-94 service drive, the one EL1998P71 recorded here.

For this recording, I used a binaural head with B&K 4190 measurement microphones, plugged into my Macbook and recorded with Audacity. it was raining out, so the best I could do was set the recording head in my back seat and open the car window a bit. Still worked out, though.

it's biased towards the right ear, as that was closer to the open window.

Nice recording. The weather over in my neck of the woods managed to hold off long enough for me to get a decent system recording from my back deck.

Good recording, glad to see more high quality recorders out there. Binaural is the way to go. I'd say directional rotating sirens like the Thunderbolt are hard to record, since you have to constantly have to monitor the input to prevent clipping. Usually when it's lightly raining or windy outside, I stuff the microphones under my shirt, shoulder to shoulder, so I can still get a nice recording.

the mics themselves are $1,100 each, never mind the preamps and conditioner/power supply. I wasn't going to risk it :P
