LRAD

Wed Jan 27, 2010 3:07 am

I was visiting the University of Florida campus recently (great place) and noticed a lack of sirens, which have become commonplace on most campuses. I checked out their emergency preparedness plan and found that they have a device called LRAD 500. Here is a link:

Apparently, it is mounted on a truck and can be directed at a section of campus. They only have one, however, which seems odd since its a large campus. Anyone seen this in action??

Yes, actually, I have. On the Animal Planet series Whale Wars, the Japanese whaling fleet uses an LRAD 1000 or similar to deter environmental activists trying to harass them.

I left this board in early 2010. I am not a part of the siren community in any sense anymore. I will not provide assistance or information.

I seen that show too =P When they were pointing the LRAD at them, it was actually really annoying to hear it from the TV, I would imagine its 10 times worse to hear it in real life.

Their model LRAD 1000X is rated at 152 dB at 1 meter (122 dB at 100 feet) over a beamwidth of +/- 15 degrees at 1 kHz. That's very impressive for a device that measures 14" x 14" x 6.5" and weighs in at a mere 15 pounds!!

I wonder as to what the power-consumption of that thing is, considering it looks rather efficient. I remember a similar thread to this, with an "M.A.D." system of flat membranes similar to these things.

MAD vs LRAD

I found the following on the MAD array but could not find its counterpart about the LRAD. The MAD arrays come in much larger sizes.

Apparently so, since they've made a listing under this category on their website. It's still a work in progress.
