Yep, that's an STL-10 by the sound of it. The Doppler effect makes it sound creepy. I don't think I've ever heard one of those used for fire calls.

Ye betcha...and a beautiful sound she makes too with the audio waves bouncing off things and dancing in the humid nighttime atmosphere.

There used to be one in the hamlet jut south of where I live. One of the reasons why it sounded so close for being a bit over a mile away was that they decided to install it at ground level.

Imagine waking up to that in the middle of the night during a tornado warning...

Imagine the increased range of the 2001 if it had it's ports reduced to seven. The STL-10 was the most effective omnidirectional siren Federal ever made.

Which induces me with a random thought: does anybody on the siren board own a 2001 (of any kind). (preferably someone who could "experiment with it")

I just listened to a clip of the Silent Hill siren on YouTube, and it does sound very similar to that STL-10, especially with the Doppler effect. The sound for the Silent Hill siren was probably an E-57, which sounds almost exactly like an STL-10, with added studio effects. I've never seen the movie, but that's something I might do next Sunday...

The E-57 has a lighter rotor and has a faster acceleration/deceleration rate than the ponderous STL-10, but they both sound close to the same frequency at top speed.
