Centrifugal clutch. Only engages when the engine revs above idle. Throttle position was controlled by solenoid connected to on/off agastats that controlled throttle solenoid.

Engine speeds up and slows down to make the attack signal. It's done through the Bendix-Startix timer and landline or radio system.
The clutch is a centrifugal clutch. The engine will start and idle around 1200 RPM, the clutch engages and starts to spin the chopper around 1300-1400 RPM according to the manual.

No, in the case of my unit, it was manually started at the machine, and then the operator would activate the timer by hand, the. Let the MD do its thing for the set time

I recently came back to this thread to see how it was holding up. Congrats for finally getting it home. Once you have it fully restored, you should bring it to SirenCon, which is an annual event where enthusiasts can bring sirens and set them off at a campground in Rhinelander.

All depends what sort or timers/controls it was equipped with. From what I'm seeing so far, MD'S were equipped with multiple different levels of control packages, depending on what the customer wanted.

Will be taking a pile of parts to be sandblasted today. Local welder I know lets me rent his professional grade cabinet for $50/hr. Can't beat it. Repro Wisconsin decal coming in the next few days.

Got the flywheel, starter, and oil cap painted.

Had to replace the ring gear on the flywheel as it had cracked. Engines Service in Milwaukee had a NOS ring gear IN STOCK. $77 out the door. Heated the ring gear up with light propane heat and tapped it right on. Just like a steam locomotive tire! Man those guys are nuts with how many parts they have in stock
