Sirens to sound on 9/11

Wed Sep 07, 2011 11:26 pm

I've been told by a fellow YouTuber that he read an article that some cities will sound their sirens on Sunday for the 10-year 9/11 anniversary. I have found a few articles of some cities/counties that will activate their siren systems.

These places I have found will activate sirens:

Sioux City, Iowa

South Sioux City, Nebraska

Hudson County, New Jersey

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

Webster County, Kentucky

Omaha, Nebraska

Teton County, Wyoming

Douglas County, Nebraska (?)

Guymon, Oklahoma

Hudson County, New Jersey

Oak Forest, Illinois

Renville County, Minnesota

Miami County, Kansas (?)

Albert Lea, Minnesota

Dearborn, Michigan

Armstrong County, Pennsylvania(Gaiser FD and others)

Does anybody know of any other places that will also do this?

Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

What a way to scare people. Just what we need on 9-11, panic in these cities. 911 call centers will surely be frustrated. These should be used only for war emergencies, not commemoration. I can see people wondering when the bombs'll drop.

I will continue to edit this list as I find more places that will do this.

Hmm, very interesting!! There was even a blog in one of the local newspapers about this. I asked Shawnee County EM on their facebook if they are planning on doing this, I'll see what they reply back with. But I have found these communities also sounding their sirens on 9/11.

Webster County, KY
Teton County, WY

Some people are apathetic to sirens. Other will call 911 about them going off, without check TV or radio first.

When we did have working sirens around here, the Apollo 11 splashdown in 1969 was the only "official" use of sirens around here. All other times they went off were tests, or a few CD drills, in the era before I was born.

Or, someone pushed the wrong button in the Communications Center in Santa Clara once.

If they issue a news report prior to the sounding, they should be OK for the most part. Great idea, though. Have a minute of silence until the sirens wind down, as they do in Israel and some European countries.

Albert Lea, MN will. I noticed it last night because yesterday some of AL's sirens wouldn't shut down.

I wonder if Austin or Rochester will do the same? I'll be in Janesville, WI this weekend so if they do it I'll get footage.

I e-mailed the Hennepin County Sheriff's office (they're the ones that activate the sirens for Hennepin County, where I live). I told them about how many other counties around the country are doing so, and also gave them a couple of online newspaper links to articles about it. Hopefully they get the email in time and give it some thought! I'll be ready with the BumbleBolt at noon to do my siren tribute! :D
