Rooftop mounted sirens

Sat Jan 21, 2012 3:39 pm

I was thinking about rooftop mounted sirens, so I started this thread. I'm just curious, What roof-top mounted sirens have you guys ever seen?

I've heard of a Thunderbolt 1003 atop the US courts building in Atlanta, but the only one I've seen in person is a Thunderbolt Atop Birmingham City Hall

(siren is on the second building on the left side, left side of the building)

EDIT: Here are some close-ups of city hall, you may be able to see the siren more clearly.

EDIT 2: I just remembered another rooftop mounted siren, the FS Modulator 4016 atop of building C at the Gwinnett Technical College

T-bolt 1000 in Ottawa IL. The model 7 in my avatar was on the roof of our old fire station until the mid '70s.

In Minneapolis/St. Paul, we have quite a few Thunderbolts mounted on roof tops. In Bloomington (about 10 minutes from me on city streets), they have an Allertor on the roof of JFK High School. Bloomington also has a few roof-mounted Thunderbolts. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Here are some of the Minneapolis Thunderbolts. I know of one more that's not on Youtube yet; maybe I'll record that one some day. Anyhow, here you go:

The one I hear from my work's parking lot, over the 2001 that's only 500' away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDyW1j6Z9vo

Pretty sure this one is on a roof. Haven't seen it yet, but my sister lives about 7 blocks away so I'll go see it next time I'm over there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW8bLio25lE

My favorite Thunderbolt. The one I essentially grew up with:

Bloomington, MN roof-mounted sirens:

JFK High School. Man this thing looks huge from 98th street! Every time I drive by, I'm still surprised at how big it looks. It seems larger than my Allertor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJJqY2v6akI

More sirens in Hamilton County seem to be rooftops rather than pole-mounted. There will be a lot less rooftop sirens though once all of the new sirens are installed, and most rooftops will be on fire stations.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(
