Waitsburg, Washington noon siren

Tue Mar 12, 2013 3:12 am

I drove up to Waitsburg today to look at those horns, which are apparently just very old speakers. They are visible on the city hall building on the right. However, I caught the Sterling siren across the street sounding for a noon test.

I detect two different ports that obviously don't vary by much...1 or 2 at most.

This is IMO odd for a Sterling.

It is a standard dual-16 port. You are probably hearing a Doppler effect or just the husky quality of those long rotors. If it were something like a 15/16, there would be a pronounced 2nd interval like those 8/9 sirens in Portugal.

Sounds just like a double 16 port sterling. But note these are very old Rotors and they can be pitted or have pieces missing so it will effect the sound on them

IT sounds very healthy for a 90+ year old siren!

I think it's just the echo bouncing off the buildings and the nearby hill. BTW, wasnt the five-horse Sterling a single head?

The echo on the wind-up is epic. This siren has a unique low undertone, probably due to an issue with at least one of the rotors, like Archon said. Nevertheless, it makes it sound great.
