I think that you're listening to a compressed-gas siren, though there could be just a horn.

I am 100% gonna go with someone's mouth on the mic making noises.

Thats not possible. 1: I can't maintain a sound like that for that long, and 2: I don't have multi hundred dollar editing tools to make a short sound sound long.

Somebody did do that with their mouth. I'd bet my life on it. Terrible attempt at a horn sound.

Perhaps it came from the other end . . .

This is absolutely awful, most definately a human made noise. This is suprisingly somewhat similar to the vocal sounding siren noises in your post on the model 2 and whelen? in the main siren forum

Actually no. This was a bit of a teaser for a home made horn of mine.....yes, it sounds bad, but it's loud....You shoulda seen my cat. "here kitty kitty" *HOONK* That cat jumped, turned head over butt and ran, at first getting no traction  cats can be fun with horns. I made this out of an old air horn I got from a junkyard, and I had some help from someone who does welding to get a four and a half foot long horn built togehter from various peices of metal. Not the prettiest thing, or the nicest sounding but it's loud. The mic was rattling, so I couldn't get a decent sound out of it. It has a similar sound to it, to that of a cross between a Leslie A-200 and a Class A Foghorn.

Give me some beans, add some reverb in the editing, and I'll give you one hell of a Diaphone recording!
