What year were Model 5s discontinued?

Wed Mar 05, 2014 10:37 pm

What about Model 5Ts? We're 5Ts discontinued before normal 5s or at the same time?

I recall hearing that they were discontinued sometime around 1990 or 1991

I think there's a Chinese company still making "Model 5s". I remember them showing up on eBay a lot in the late 2000s. If I recall, they were very good clones of the Federal Model 5. So my guess is that Federal Signal sold off the Model 5/7 patents to whomever that company in China was, after they stopped making them anymore themselves.

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

Lion King signal makes knockoff model 5 sirens. They also make knockoff 2001's, t121's etc.

I love the photo of their Model 2. Looks like Federal's photo with their logo thrown on it

any patents held on the Model 5/7 were likely to have expired by the 1960s. They only last for like 17 years, and winning extensions can be tough.

It probably is. I think one or two other of their photos is just an empty housing with no siren guts. I'm suspicious of whether or not that company actually makes those models.

I thing that the Lion King Model 5 has one of their Chinese-style 8-port sirens inside, rather than a copy of a Federal Signal siren. Only the housing looks similar.

To the best of my knowledge, the Model 5 was discontinued in the mid-1980s. One of the last Model 5s sold locally, was to a township in southern Saginaw County, Michigan. It was installed by Westshore Services, and according to Jeff Dupilka, it was the last Model 5 they sold, as they were discontinued shortly thereafter. I believe it's still in use to this day. The last time I saw it, the siren was gray in color, on a tall wooden pole, and had a white rectangular "Federal Signal" rectangle logo on it.

Sincerely yours,

Ron W.
