Pelham, AL in process of phasing out sirens!

Mon Mar 17, 2014 2:30 am

This is ridiculous! I found this today and I couldn't believe an area that is obviously tornado prone, is getting rid of their siren system. For those of you who don't know where Pelham, AL is, it is located south of Birmingham, AL in Shelby County.

According to the article I posted in this thread, they will continue to be used until every siren quits working. The sirens will be disconnected as each one fails.

I'm hoping this is temporary? Why are they phasing out sirens?

Reverse 911, email and text message alerts, etc. We all know that these are no replacement for sirens, especially since not everyone is able to be alerted electronically, but can always be alerted by sirens if heard.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

Betcha the real reason is money. They probably think reverse 911 is a fool-proof, no maintenance system. Usually a sign that they're about to be sold a bill of goods by some huckster.

And lawl at the mayor saying it's about "residents taking control of their own safety." Guy sounds like a real peach.

Hopefully this won't end up like other incidents where they realize the stupidity of disconnecting sirens only after a tornado comes through.

Oh yes the two pod Mod which is the one that screams like the old silly squad. I don't think anyone will care that is until the next twister will bare. Then the city will have guilt for the ruined fancy things they had built. Now here after that news, we're all showing reactions, like we're all down in the blues. So yes my friend that two pod Mod. Now to cheer you up would you like a piece of my delicious cod?

I'm having too much fun.

I'm speechless in regards to the situation. Also the reporter in the video sounds similar to Dr. Phil.

Oregon coastal cities like Tillamook have phased them out. The good thing with most of the cities though is once the new systems fail and once they see that, the sirens on the volunteer fire station can be used.
