Wowwwww, I remember reading about this thing years ago when I first got into sirens. I think someone posted about it on the old board. Nobody really knew much about it but its nice to finally hear what it actually sounded like. Great find!

I think that the whistle is a compressed-air siren.

Really does sound like it... a whistle shouldn't have that distinctive "wind-up" sound.

I believe that's just due to the way the pressure ramps up. Also, when it's doing the attack signal you can hear all sorts of little noises that would only come from a whistle, not a siren.

Really cool video by the way. What an impressive machine!

Nice av, Blasty!

Anywho, I guess you are right. The ramp-up in pressure would probably make that sound. Because the wind-up is too fast to be a siren.

That is the most impressive whistle I've ever heard! I want to build one. What kind of pressure does that require? Would it be more or less efficient on steam?

According to his website, it needs 15psi but a lot of CFMs (1800). I think the grey thing attached to it is the blower. In the video, he mentions a diesel powered generator which I think is to run the blower motor.

In terms of siren sound level measurments; the one in the video produces 125db @ 100 feet on axis with the output. His later design, which incorporated a large horn, was able to do 135db @ 100 feet.
