Funeral Procession with police & Vans

Mon Jun 04, 2007 5:02 pm

I was at work this morning, picking up the trash in the parking lot when all of a sudden, I heard sirens. I thought it was an ambulance with dual toned sirens.

I waited to see what was going on, and here come 2 police cars with their lights & sirens on, then there's a funeral van, some motorcycles, another van and some more police cars! I saluted whomever was in the funeral van. It was someone from the millitary who died in iraq. This was the first time I had seen a procession like this, and I've seen normal processions before too, but this one was neat compared to some of the other ones I've seen!

It used to be a common courtesy too pull over until the funeral procession has passed. People do not seem to follow that rule anymore. I wonder why? Some places it is against the law not too pull over.

I feel honored to pull over for a military funeral procession.
If I can, I would get out and hold my cap over my heart.

But I oppose use of sirens by fake cops.

My wife and I thought there was a whole fire department response.
It was three fake cops accompanying a procession blaring their sirens in a hospital zone.

One afternoon we were driving emergent to a hospital.
We overtook a funeral procession whose sirens I could hear because
I was trying to be as quiet and unobtrusive as possible.
Too bad the fake cops don't follow that concept.

Fake cops should be prohibited from having emergency lights and sirens.
They can have yellow or purple funeral lights.
One can close red intersections by nosing out one-lane-at-a-time
without use of a siren.

Bad term on my part. They do not try to mimic Law Enforcement.
Not law enforcement officers, these guys have their own cars or motorcycles equipped with emergency lights and sirens.
They like to blare their sirens - more than me when I'm emergent.
They should not be allowed sirens nor the same colored lights as law enfocrement.
I'll allow yellow or purple.

They have them in my area...they are surplus Caprice police cars complete with Federal JetStream lightbars and TS100 sirens. They run the cars as if it was a police escort...they pull ahead of everyone else going 40-50 mph with full lights and sirens blaring.
Ich spreche nicht Deutsch...doh!

In northern California, the funeral procession is led by the hearse with a yellow rotor (no purple in CA) and police usually go ahead to block intersections. If they go onto the freeway, they may get a CHP escort and will stick to the center or right lane at about 45 MPH. All cars in the procession are supposed to turn on their headlights.

They are dead. What's the hurry? I had an officer involved in a collision in my town trying to stop people at a red light. Not worth it! No one has a clue it's a funeral when the cop is gone. They just wounder why people arn't stopping for the red light. Worse now, with the daytime running lights.

same in Ohio too. They have the police motorcycle escort that will block the roadways.. but the hearse has purple lights and the headlights wig wag. you get a purple funeral flag on your car then they tell you too turn your Bright lights and your Flashers on. Even with out a police escort i pull over and stop, For respect of the mourning family.

Each vehicle should have a magnetic flag attached to the front hood (are hoods all still metal?) so people can see it is part of a funeral procession.
