Hello from Idaho! And my first siren

Wed Jun 01, 2016 3:56 pm

Hello, I just joined yesterday and by no coincidence also received my first siren at the same time. It's a 110v Federal model L, I'm not sure how old it is. It appears to be in good working condition. The person I bought it from acquired it at a surplus sale from INL (Idaho National Laboratory). They test nuclear reactor designs there and I'd bet this was stationed at one of them.

So, anyway, greetings and enjoy!

Welcome aboard! The Model L looks to be between about 1958- mid 1960's due to the "Formerly " portion on the bottom of the tag. Looks to be in stellar shape!

Thanks for the info! That would fit well with where it came from. It works great too! I took a video of my test, but I don't have a YouTube channel yet.

I'm looking into buying or building a control box that I could use with it next.

You can buy a cheap generic timer(someone please link it!), or you can buy a AR/AF timer that 'ole federal sirens use. Unfortunately, they are hard to come bye. The only one's on ebay are AF timers(which supports a hi-lo signal, which model L's can't do), and its quite expensive. Around $280. I personally have a newer Model L hooked up to a AR timer!
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

If I could get hold of an AR timer for a decent price I would. Short of that, I think it might be a good project to make my own control box. Tinker with it and learn something in the process perhaps :)

Welcome! I just returned from the Coeur d'Alene area, where I've never seen a siren. The only one I saw was a Model 5 in Potlatch.
