When was the 2001s with the rounded back first made? Also, when did they stop making them?

Hm, I think they started manufacturing them in the 80's, but in the late 90's they released the newer more improved model.

If i'm right (and I'm probably not but what the heck) the roundback was produced first beginning in the late 80's. Then it became the square back version somewhere in the mid 90's. So the 2001's progression goes like this

late 1980's - 2001-SRN TypeI (roundback) -127 Decibles
mid 1990's - 2001-SRN TypeII (square back) -127 Decibles
Jan. 2003 - 2001-SRNB (new beltless rotator) - 128 Decibles
Jan. 2007 - 2001-130 (increased sound output) - 130 Decibles

Some of the dates might be a little off but I think that is generally the progression of the 2001's. I've seen 3 of the 130's in person and hopefully here in the next couple of weeks will get to hear one during a test. It will still be the same sound just more of it.

Actually, after the square back and before the 128 db model/Series B, there was a cone improvement. The square back's cones looked just like the round back model's at first, and only later did they change it to the cones that are present today.

My guess is that the square back model was introduced to fit a larger chopper (and maybe motor?). If you look at the size of the round back vs. the square back, the square is obviously larger. Just rampant speculation, but my 2 cents anyway :D

Your right I totally forgot about that varient of the 2001. So that would make 5 different types of 2001's. I've got images of all of them, 2001-SRN type1 I found on the net, 2001-SRN typeII I found on sirencentral, 2001-SRN typeIII my picture, 2001-SRNB my picture, 2001-130 is from the Federal website. Those are all of them that I know of although I have to admit I forgot about the new square back with the old horn.

The original round back was introduced in 1990. It only lasted 1 or 2 years before they went to the square back. This was supposedly due to a lawsuit between ACA and federal, in which ACA said that it looked too much like the penetrator series and it was patent infringement. In reality, the round back mimicks that of the 500. So they changed it.

In 1996 they changed the cone design. This was to accomodate a motor change. They switched motor manufacturers, the new motors were bigger, so they made the cone bigger and put the motor in the cone instead of the square box.

In 2001 they changed the stator to be 128DB. In 2002 or 2003 they came out with the B series with the gear driven rotator. In 2006 they came out with the 130.

I believe Federal started selling the 2001's in late 1989.

Look at the article on the thunderbolt siren on Wikipedia.org. It says that the 2001 series was introduced in 1988. 2 years before the Thunderbolt series was phased out.

The same nuts on this board are the same ones who write a lot of stuff on Wikipedia. I wouldn't believe the siren stuff on there as the absolute truth (there were many errors last time I looked there). I do however, would like to see some Federal brochures form the late 80's as they transitioned to their current siren lineup.

If I am correct, then the 2001-130 is the 5th generation of the 2001 series.
