Could sirens be used to warn of Flash Floods?

Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:13 am

In the beginning of May major flooding hit the Topeka area...many folks homes were flooded and there was sewer backups...but the city is looking into ways of alerting the public in case this happens again. A local news station had a thing where you could say what you think the county could do to warn the public. I suggested using the sirens. He said he would tell the County EM. The City is looking to better inform residents by looking at the idea of an emergency alert system...but we already have a EAS on Cable and Radio...could this mean sirens? Have to wait and see but i was wondering...how many towns/communities sound their sirens for floods? I know Sapulpa, OK and Tulsa, OK do...

There is currently a flooding crisis in the UK (and down in Victoria too), and the Carters that were used in WWII are now used as flood sirens.

Yes... There's a siren network in Ventura County, CA to warn of flash flooding/overflowing banks of the Ventura River. It covers the towns of Oakview, Meiners Oaks, and a part of northern City of Ventura. The way the terrain is in that area, a really bad downpour up at Wheeler Ridge usually causes sudden flooding downstream on the Ventura River. Last time in 1991, there was a lot of damage and chaos with last-minute rescues.

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

No, the only thing that happened in our part of the city is that all of the main roads out of my neighborhood was closed because of flood waters (School was cancelled) and the creek behind my house came into the backyard. But chances of it getting up to the house is very slim since there is a pretty noticeable hill in the backyard and the house is at top of the hill. Folks along the Shunganunga, Shunga, and Ward Martin creek was not so fortunate...

I believe the majority are more likely to be Castle Castings.

One state fishing lake in Kansas (I forget the name) has a whole bunch of Tyfons they use to warn people of flash flooding.
