WHELEN OMNIDIRECTIONALS part2 Questions

Wed Sep 05, 2007 1:15 am

I had posted a question reguarding which Dearborn Sirens were which. They are all Whelen Omnidirectionals and installed around late 1980s, or 1990 thereabouts. I have included some detailed photos of the Exact 2 types of units near my house because I want to record the eldest or best of these sirens.Any help would be great.

Siren #1 has 5 driver cells in the middle and also has "screens" between the cells. It is the only one with the screens like this that I have seen. I have my eye on this one. Is it at 2700? something... Id like to know the exact model.

Siren #2

is the most COMMON type, I have found around at least 10 of the 29 sirens are this type with 4 cells in the middle and more of a "hex" look upclose than round.

Siren #3

As found on another site, this is on Millitary Avein Dearborn and is similar to siren #W1 with the 5 drivers, but no screens. Whats the differance?

Please help identify 1,2 , and 3 if you can. And any request of which I should shoot first.

Thanks!!

Mike

Those are Whelen WPS-2800 series sirens. The county that I live in has around 60-70 of those. The one in Dearborne, though I can't tell for sure, looks like a 2900 series siren, as the screens are closer to the speaker cells instead of on the 2800's where the screens are closer to the outside of the assembly, if this makes any sense.

There are a few of those type in Mt Clemens, MI.
One is at 16 mile and Gratiot Ave.
And the other is north of Joy rd on Gratiot Ave.
There are a few FedSigs 2001's mixed in there too.
Seems a strange combo to me.

Which siren is older? The one with the Screens (#1) or the others?

Siren types 2 and 3 are 2700's. The first is most likely a 2800 series siren.

2700s

THANKS for the help! :) So correct me if I am wrong, those last 2 would be a 2740 and a 2750? and the first one, maybe a 2805 Are the 2700s pretty common these days? or are they reaching the end of their useful life? which would be better to record? I always would laugh at the way the voice sounds on those 2700s from afar... like the adults always sounded on the Charlie Bown / Peanuts cartoons, like a garbaly trumpet..... Thanks Again!

The 2700's aren't too common around my neck of the woods, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say you are absolutely correct. If I'm not mistaken, the 2700 was the first Whelen to employ the "unit style" you see now...as far as omni-directionals. The 2700 family came before the 2800, and the 2900 is here to replace the 2800 series.
