Re: Virginia Siren Map

I gave some thought about the 2001-SRNs that Brenden had found a while back and I do believe they were once used for the nearby Lorton Reformatory. Knowing that most of the reformatory has basically been disbanded, turned into the suburbs (with a small portion of it still being used to house inmates), it would explain why the sirens have still shown some, but minimal activity over the years. Continuing down, this would also explain the installation of the sirens occurring during/around the 1990s... around the same time the Nottoway Correctional Center purchased their system of Whelen WPS-3000s.

With that being said, anyone else think the same?

EDIT : Forgot to mention! But to add something on : I cannot bump into any article mentioning the Reformatory installing of, or using of a siren-type of system. I should also mention that the sirens have "off-set activity". One appears to be dormant than the other, but both sirens appear to have some years in between testing. Quite a strange system.

Assuming you're still updating the map, this is just a reminder to add the Sterling siren at Star Tannery Volunteer Fire Department.

Thanks for the new location! I try to keep this map updated with the latest, but they're infrequent as with me hopping from this map to that map.

Falls Church Siren Found

Mon Mar 21, 2022 1:44 am

I passed by the Congressional School yesterday while on a school bus and spotted a Whelen WPS-2803/4. It is quite hard to snap a picture of the siren from the road due to the school being on a hill, and that people without permission can't enter premises of the school.

I'll try to attempt to get an actual picture in the coming days, but it wont be a cakewalk to pull-off.

Oh. My. Gosh. Could you have possibly just solved this mystery? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws6lo9nuj4g
Sirens may not be sexy, but they sure work.

The Darley Model 2 in Tappahannock is actually a Darley Model 5.

Thanks.

For the Falls Church siren I'm trying to still get it confirmed "officially" but the school isn't giving a statement on it.

Dave Statter apparently got confirmation from the Congressional School that there is actually a siren on the school used for weather emergencies(?)
