long lost recordings from the early days

Tue Jun 24, 2008 7:52 am

As mentioned in the Somerset PA pic topic I had found 3 recordings made by my good buddy Steelman Hiles. While scrolling through both sites I found more oldies, some probably haven't been heard in years. These files are in both wav and MP3 format and were recording using tape recorders so some imprefections, blips, ect maybe present. Here they are

The infamous "bolts&m10" featuring Somerset's 2 1003s and old M-10 sounding for a fire call at 2am. recorded by Steelman
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... d_M_10.mp3

The 1st recording us "old timers" myself included heard of an Allertor. There was also an alert recording to go with this one, but I lost it a few years ago

http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... lertor.wav

Another Steelman Hiles recording. The 2T that was on the Milleville rescue squad sounding for a call. the 2T was taken down a few years back and given to 2 EMTs (one took the housing one took the siren itself) You can hear the activation tone right before the siren starts.

Another recording from Steelman. Millville VFd's former 3 phase Model 7 sounding for a fire call. It starts in the rescue squad, which is why you hear the talking in the beginning.

I have no idea who recorded this, but I present, the 1st Thunderbolt recording we ever heard. Note the wind/thunder in the beginning, and you can clearly hear the "A" series blower rumbling.

http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... _1000T.wav

Again I have no clue who recorded it, but this is the 1st good 1003 recording we ever heard. There was also at the time one with an inoperitive low tone solenoid that was recorded up close, and a very high toned one recorded from a tornado video in Spearmen Tx, but this was the best. This was the last time this 1003 ever sounded hi-lo as it was being retired as a fire siren and was going to be solely used as a storm siren.

Some of you may have heard this. This is the 1st 3T22 hi-lo recording we ever heard. Located in Northport LI, NY. Sounding for a noon test. Recorded by Brett Jones. Still in service, but hi-lo is no longer used last I knew. This hooked me on the 3T22.
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... IGHLOW.wav

Another one some of you may have heard before. the 1st recording of a 3T22 doing rise hi-lo, for a fire call
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... ecycle.wav

Another one some of you may have heard. Northpost LI, NY's 2 HP Screamer. you may want to turn down your volume as this recording's loud. Also note the motor capacitor start re-engaging speeding up the wind down. again recorded by Brett Jones
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/warning ... mer2HP.wav

another one of my favorites. again from Northport. the 3T22 and a 12 port 5 sounding for a fire call from Brett's backyard. Normally there'd be 2 Gamewell Diaphones blasting away, drowning out the sirens, but there was roof work on the FD so they were turned off.

Yet another fire call from Brett's backyard, but this time the 5 stands out more.
http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/thunderbol ... 3t22fc.wav

The 12 port 5 heard in the last recording doing a noon test.
http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/thunderbol ... noon_2.wav

and finally another Brett Jones recording. A Sterling Little Giant doing a 2 cycled noon test. This sirne is underpowered, and you can also hear Centerport LI, NY's 8 port 5 also doing a 2 cycle test as well.

I've got that CD that I'll dig up to see if I have anymore oldies. I know the final siren contest recordings are on this CD.

If these recordings don't work let me know.

Enjoy

EDIT: for some reason it's not letting me link directly. You may have to copy & paste.

I don't think that the URL tags are necessary in this situation. However, if you need to use them, there should be an equals sign and not a bracket just before the web addresses. They should look like this, replace the parentheses with brackets.

I'd love to see those original Siren Contest winner recordings, you know, the 2T22 and low tone 5 sounding? And then the one with the 5T and the WS-1000 (please tell me you have those, lol). Oh, I gotta dig up some of the few old recordings I have. (I wish I had more, but my hard drive with EVERYTHING on it crashed back in 2005)

Right click and "Save Target As" for the links that Jason corrected.

Those sirens sound awesome. :) :)

Wow, these are the recordings we heard back when I was just a kid. This was around the same time I recorded a Model 2 and a Vortex. I know for a fact it was the first Vortex recording because Jason said it sounded like a mosquito buzzing, thanks to my shotty little tape recorder.

As for the quality of some of those recordings, you just can't beat the audio quality of some of the older recorders. Now we have digital cameras and camcorders that take really crappy audio and video and Youtube. I remember when we got a recording back in the day posted on the board, it was a really big deal. If 2 recordings were posted, it was like recieving a thousand dollars lol. If a NEW siren was posted, whether it be pics or audio, or a video even, it would take the cake, ya know? Now it seems like when a common siren is posted its like "yeah, 2001dc, moving on."

Dan, thanks for posting those recordings. THOSE are what I call childhood memories!

I think some of these recordings used to be on ARS's main website before it crashed.

Interesting..

I love the 2t recording, that is one of the sweetest sounding sirens ever made. Has a killer reverb also.

Hey Dan, could you please post these on FileDen, so they can be more accessible to people with screen readers? When I right click the links, there's no "save as" option for me. FileDen provides the ability to direct link to the files. If you have any trouble with FileDen, please PM me, so you can email me the files, and I can post them on FileDen if you'd like. I'd love to hear these recordings!

Yeah, that reverberation makes it sound really ominous. It sends a weird feeling down me.

Great to see some of the old recordings; takes me right back down through memory lane, back when recordings like this were rare.
