Is this a siren?

Sat Nov 29, 2008 1:57 am

On a website, I found this photo that consideres this a siren. This is in Cincinnati, Ohio on top of the Rookwood Pottery Building.

Is this a siren, or just speakers?

Technically if it is used for warning of impending danger, it is considered a Civil Defense Siren. But it is just a PA speaker, probably on top of a church for announcing times.
Or the town could be using it as a ghetto siren.
But by the looks of them, they are most likely 25WRMS which, if put to their limit, have a 70db range of 200yds.

I look for a siren at this exact location on Hamilton County's siren map, and there is no siren shown. This is not on a church, it's on The Rookwood Pottery Building, which is a restaurant. Who knows what this is.[/quote]

Perhaps it was once a church, and they left the speakers behind.

It has never been a church as far as I know. It was originally home to the Rookwood Pottery Company, and was turned into a restaurant at some point after the company filed for bankruptcy.

They look like the speakers used in the 80's and 90's by the Verdin company for their electronic bells.

A while back I had a database of all the Hamilton County sirens given to me by the Werdens. It's been a while since I've had that database but I know there weren't any sirens that consisted of a roof mounted speaker array like that. The only electronic sirens Hamilton County even has are some EOWS*1212s around Fernald and an EOWS*115 which I believe has been replaced.

The only thing I can think of that the speaker array would be for is for a carillon system.

Thanks. Whoever posted that photo made a mistake. I have not seen a siren on Hamilton County's map in this location.
