Elizabeth, NJ Thunderbolts

Sat Jan 03, 2009 5:16 am

I ran this one up the flagpole a few years ago, but nobody seemed to know what was up back then, so I will try again.

Elizabeth, NJ was a veritable forest of Thunderbolt 1000's. I am not sure if any are active, but some still stand. There is one near Exit 13 of the NJ Turnpike (Cole Place and Trenton Avenue) that has been there for at least forty years! Another is on Westfield Avenue west of the railroad station, I remember seeing this one in 1971, and is still there. Yet one I remember seeing on Newark Avenue at Sheridan (in the small park) in 1976 seems to be gone. I am going to hunt around some more and see what I can see. But my question is - are these still active? They don't look like they're in very good shape, that's for sure.
