Has the Tennessee EMA finally come to their senses?!

Wed Apr 15, 2009 3:37 am

I almost fell out of my chair when i saw this today. Finally Tennesee lawmakers are putting a bill out there that is going to require Sirens!! I knew it was going to take something horrible (Murfresboro F4 last week) to wake them up!! Here is the video and and extra link underneath that that shows the counties that will be getting siren additions.

Please be Whelen or ASC as the final product, those ATI's need to be shot!
Ugh at 35 seconds in with that horrid sine-tone. 40 people per square mile is quite little, but hey nothing wrong with a bit over overkill! :)

They will probably go with Whelen in Rutheford County since MTSU campus is using Whelen, but hey hopefully Whelen, ASC, and Federal will be the on the list.

It's about time Middle TN... got sirens. I grew up in Smyrna... there are no sirens there. Rutherford county ranks in the top 3 for tornadoes recorded in TN. No Ati sirens... Whelen's 3016s (or WPS- 2809s) are what are needed throughout the rural areas...
Still close enough to a Fed Sig 550AT to drive out on test day: First Friday in May - 7PM!

Sadly, you guys are probably in for more of the "majestic whimpy wail of the ATIs" (to quote cdv777 )

I am amazed that overblown bullhorns like those are allowed to be called sirens because they are not.

You want sirens, stop the jawboning and just call up ASC, Federal Signal or Whelen and get some T128s, 2001s or even some nice Vortex-R4s already! Yes they cost, but you get what you pay for

Djscrizzle, bear in mind that Whelen discontinued the 3016 a while ago.. now the 4004 is the equivalent, the Vortex is the lower spec version of the 4004. 3016 = 16x 100w = 1600w, 4004 = 4x 400w = 1600w.

Pretty much Davidson county(Nashville) is the only place that has the ATI. Most other counties around here have mostly 2001's, Modulators, and scattered Whelens. There are some counties in TN that do have ASC sirens, but then again it is going to boil down to money. If they have until 2012 to get the money raised then hopefully they will do their homework on all the siren companies and pick the best one, not the cheapest one.

Apparently ATI are quite a bit more expensive than ASC, Federal or Whelen - a 2001 is around $20k when you've got the head, pole, controls and batteries as well as installation. The head+controls for the ATI HPSS16 are supposed to be $23k from what i hear and the HPSS32 is $26k.

I really hope we don't get any more ATI sirens. ATI makes poor quality sirens and don't have a tone that carrys far at all.

Please, I beg of you, please be anything but a ATI sirens!

I mean, there are cheaper and better sirens out there than ATI, don't choose the cheapest product out there because cheaper usually means bad quality!

Heck, you could get a Federal 2001-130 complete, BRAND NEW for cheaper than an ATI HPSS16! Even Whelen 4004's, Vortex R4's and ASC sirens! They may be a little more money, BUT YOU GET THE SERVICE, RELIABILITY AND QUALITY THAT YOU PAY FOR!

Besides, 2012 is a long time from now, at least go ahead and install at least one siren in each city for now, until the funds are acquired to fulfill the rest of the system!

I know the Tennessee Government and whatnot will probably see this eventually, and if you guys do, please heed this message!

Yes also bear in mind the Whelen's southeastern representative and distributor is located in Murfreesboro as well.
