Charlotte, NC Federal 550 confirmed

Wed Mar 13, 2013 11:25 pm

(Posted on behalf of Christopher Jancse from Facebook)
TrainsAndSirens1's dad was on a trip in Charlotte, and he managed to get some photos of the 4th and Tryon siren. It was a mystery for a while, but it turns out it is a Federal 550. It appears to be missing a projector for some reason. Christopher asked me to post this

Here are the pictures:

I knew it! I wonder if it's 8/12 like Calhan's?

Wow, those are some amazing pics he got! I had a really good feeling that one had to be a 550, definitely didn't look like a regular 500 from the vantage point I saw it. Pretty awesome nonetheless, just a shame it's not used any longer.

Definitely 8/12, I don't think they came in any other combination since it's essentially just a high tone (12 port) and a low tone (8 port) Model 5 on a double-shaft motor.

Very Cool. Too bad it's not in use, I wonder if Charlotte had any other 550's.

Very Nice Pics! Looks very cool sitting up there. Sad they don't use it.

Nice to see one up close! Still curious to see the rotator insides...

They should've done the SoundMaster125-style housing on that thing, that would've been sick. :D

Now this is great stuff! Bravo on getting closer photos of an ultra-rare siren.
Still close enough to a Fed Sig 550AT to drive out on test day: First Friday in May - 7PM!
