Lubbock Again Considers Sirens *Update!*

Glad to see the media and general public have gotten on board with this. I signed the petition a few days ago and gave my .02 to the city council. It looks pretty good as far as them getting a system again. It will be good to see them writing the check for this out of foresight, and not with the blood of their own citizens.

I am still astonished that Lubbock hasn't had a working system in years! Just last week we had to go to the cellar late night due to an approaching storm with a confirmed tornado. They sounded the sirens 3 times in 15 minutes. Lubbock is just 100 miles south of here. I consider us very lucky to have such a dedicated emergency manager that oversees our system of 90 sirens in Amarillo. Lubbock should be so lucky. Hope their luck doesn't run out and something horrible happens as it did in 1970! I was 10 when that happened and had family there. Can still remember seeing all the devistation. Could happen again anytime. Everything thats going on in Oklahoma should open the eyes of the powers that be there. They are very foolish if they continue to ignore what can happen.

The same thing could be said for Colorado Springs... The OEM director officially trashed the idea of sirens, though many in the lower income areas of the city don't have access to 'new' media or the power could be out, cell sites overload, etc.

I signed the petition and included some facts about siren systems. Most people believe when the power goes out that the sirens are useless. Some have been decently amazed at the new technology such as battery backup sirens are capable of. I did receive an email from a city councilman asking me to attend meetings associated with this topic so I can give my input. Ben and I are the only people around for 250 miles that know anything about sirens. I will be advising them to stay clear of ATI if this goes further.

Make sure too that they don't fall for the voice siren trap. You can buy a lot more tone only sirens and have greater coverage for the same amount of money.

Honestly I would love to see Sentry throw a bid for a bunch of 40V2TB's. Sentry is a very popular company in West Texas, and I think they will be a cheaper alternative.

The website has been updated, and it appears that this is actually starting to gain traction.
