One of the strongest earthquakes in American history was in the east on the New Madrid fault.(1811-1812) The quake was so powerful that it made the Mississippi,Ohio,Tennessee, and Kentucky rivers flow backwards for almost 4 hours. It was estimated that the quake was an 11.2,but thankfully the population was not as dense as it is today. It was felt as far as northern Maine and southern Florida.bellyjae wrote:Its truly a sad situation. One of these days a quake is going to rock the US.
I also learned that here in the states east of the Rockies that we have events like these everyday, but most take place deep in the earth and are rarely felt.
Never knew that.
I read on a Samoan news site that no sirens or church bells were sounded in Pago Pago (capitol of American Samoa) but men up in the hills beat on gas cylinders in an attempt to warn people down at sea level.Hacksaw wrote:One woman in Samoa was quoted as saying there was no sirens, no bells, it just came too fast.
